ROSEBURG, Ore. -- With fall just around the corner, local wineries in the Umpqua Valley are approaching time to harvest their grapes, and making wine has never been as fun and hands on as it was at the Melrose Vineyards this weekend.
Several hundred wine enthusiasts gathered at the vineyards in Roseburg Saturday.
While excited visitors got to experience new editions like a special events center and a new fountain, the winery takes a feet-on approach with a interactive grape stomp competition.
Deedy Parker from the Melrose Vineyards says, "I think the community really rallys because the grape industry has become such a bigger deal in our valley here, and there are so many more vineyards here in the Umpqua Valley, and we make such great wines and its certainly something we can all be proud of."
Crowds of people gathered to ccompetete in the stomp. There was also an opportunity to participate in an I Love Lucy look alike competition and enjoy music from the Eugene band Bullit.
Harvest season runs around the begining of October, so local wineries are waiting for just a little bit more sun before the grapes are ready.
